Closing the West Monroe jail has saved taxpayers at least $3,964,000. Don’t let anyone tell you different.
After meeting with the Police Chief, Mayor Staci made a business decision to close the City jail back in 2020. The WM jail only averaged about seven people per night. Financially it was not feasible to ask the taxpayers to continue to pay $842,748 a year to keep the jail open. Now, those arrested are detained at OCC for an average total cost of only $182,072 a year. So far, Mayor Staci’s decision to close the jail, has saved taxpayers at least $3,964,000. These savings have been used to improve police pay, create a Community Police Unit and more.
We can trust West Monroe Police Department to do a great job, including making arrests.
